Megan Michelson, Writer/Editor
Megan Michelson, a co-founder and manager of the Mill, is a freelance writer. She worked as the freeskiing editor for ESPN.com, and before that, as an editor at Skiing Magazine and Outside Magazine. Her work has appeared in publications including the New York Times, Powder, Men's Journal, Outside, Backpacker, and more.
Dan Abrams, Flylow Gear
Dan Abrams, one of the co-founders of Tahoe Mill, is the president and co-founder of Flylow Gear, an independent manufacturer of backcountry freeride ski outerwear, now sold in stores around the globe. Abrams started the company in 2005 in his mom's basement in Denver and moved to Tahoe in 2012.
Bruno Damico is sales rep for Dynafit, Salewa, Wild Country and Pomoca across California, Arizona, and Nevada. He studied jazz drum set performance and international business at Denver University and lived in Boulder prior to moving to Tahoe. Before his current job, he worked as a customer/dealer service rep for Backcountry Access.
Ben Kimple, Gus Banuski, Tahoe Brew Tours
Tahoe Brew Tours was established in 2016 by Ben Kimple and Gus Banuski, transplants to the Lake Tahoe region from upstate New York. The brewery tour company was founded on a foundation of degrees in Recreation Management and Tourism studies, coupled with over a decade of experience in outdoor guiding. Acting as owner/operators, Ben and Gus double as designated drivers and local guides during brewery tours; educating guests on the brewing process and history of beer, as well as the rich natural and human history of the Lake Tahoe.
Rachel Levin, Rustic Pathways
Rachel Levin is a brand engagement manager at Rustic Pathways, a travel company. She embraces the ability to work remote, living and working in a number of different states, countries, and continents over the past few years. Originally from New England, she focuses her love of travel, storytelling, and her unquenchable curiosity of humans in nature through marketing educational travel experiences that focus on social impact. Rachel is also a talented ceramicist.
Gabrielle Heath, Content Marketing
Gabbi does content marketing for Zeus, a San Francisco startup that is reimagining business travel/corporate housing. Gabbi spent six months of van life after spending the previous four years at Google. Hailing from Burlington, Vermont, she originally made her way West for the skiing, coaching the Mighty Mites at Squaw. She’s psyched to have found a balance living in the mountains while pursuing a creative career. Outside of the Mill, Gabbi is usually skiing, snapping photos, making cutting boards or hanging with her Alaskan Malamute, Moose.
Ryland Hormel, Live Better
Ryland is a partner and the creative lead for the wellness platform Live Better, which hosts retreats around the world, a week of surfing, yoga, meditation, and workshops. Outside of Live Better, Ryland has a production company called Roots Visuals that provides creative solutions to Live Better, the non-profit Anything is Everything and he helped launched the podcast, Better Human Project. Ryland spends his time on the mountain skiing and in the water paddle boarding. His dog Moose pretty much runs his life and they are both always down to explore.
Vince Sosnkowski, Palisades at Squaw
Vince Sosnkowski is a real estate developer with Acme Development and Palisades at Squaw. Acme builds apartments in military heavy markets. Palisades is a new neighborhood in Squaw. He and his partner are turning their focus to building local’s housing in the Tahoe area. When he’s not chasing his 14- and 17-year-old around the slopes, Vince can be found skiing in the backcountry, climbing, mountain biking or lake surfing.
Maika Nicholson, Sherwood Design Engineers
Maika Nicholson is a civil engineer with Sherwood Design Engineers, a San Francisco-based design firm focusing on sustainable site civil engineering, green infrastructure and integrated water resources management. Growing up in Oregon, Maika spent her childhood camping, backpacking, snowboarding, biking and floating rivers. Her desire to have these activities in her backyard brought her, and her partner Ben, to relocate from San Francisco to Tahoe City.
Georgia Strickland, Tahoe Blue Consulting
With more than 16 years experience in retail banking, marketing and investments, Georgia Strickland has been helping clients in Tahoe with their business needs since 2013. She handles bookkeeping, organizes finances, and advices on ways to improve profitability. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, she moved to the U.S. in 2011 and settled in Tahoe City in 2012. She holds a Bachelor of Business from Melbourne’s Monash University and an M.B.A. from Melbourne Business School.
Colette Nataf, Lightning AI
Colette Nataf is CEO and co-founder of Lightning AI, which uses artificial intelligence to automatically build and manage Facebook advertising campaigns. Originally from Annapolis, Maryland, she moved out to San Francisco to work in tech startups and fell in love with Lake Tahoe. She relocated with her husband and dog Sammy; she loves the lifestyle of getting to work remote while spending days hiking, mountain biking and being outdoors.
James Bartlett, Lightning AI
James Bartlett is the co-founder and COO of Lightning AI, an advertising software company that has automated digital advertising for small businesses. A born and raised Marylander, James can usually be found sprinkling Old Bay on anything and everything. After spending 5 years in San Francisco building Lightning AI, James and his co-founder/wife, Colette, decided it was time to escape the city and move to the mountains. If he’s missing from his desk, you can be sure to find James out enjoying everything that Lake Tahoe has to offer with Colette and their dog, Sammy.
Le’a Gleason, Writer
Dating back to age five, Le'a Gleason watched her mother share written work in women's creative writing and poetry groups and her interest was sparked. Le'a is now a freelance writer, editor, and nationally published journalist who officially began this path over 10 years ago at a tiny college newspaper in Hilo, Hawaii. Her local credits include Moonshine Ink, Reno's Ventrix Advertsing, Tahoe Luxury Properties, and Headwaters Science Institute.
Kirstin Guinn, Marketing Director
Kirstin Guinn is the Director of Marketing for Destination Residences Snowmass in Colorado. A firm believer in learning from every opportunity, Kirstin learned from experience that she actually doesn’t want to run her own company, and so is happy to have landed back with Destination Hotels, the country’s largest operator of independent, boutique hotels. She has been in Tahoe since 2001 but is seeing it with fresh eyes now that her son Miles has become her most trusted adventure buddy.
Brett Smith, Architect
Brett Smith is the Tahoe pioneer for DeForest Architects. DA+ is known for modern design that plays well with others. Brett joined DA+ while pursuing his Masters in Architecture at the University of Washington. He spent 4 years in the Seattle studio before returning to his native California. Brett and his wife, daughter, and dog take every opportunity to explore the mountains around their Tahoe home by ski, bike, boat, and boot.
Jarrett Barbuto, Geospatial Analyst
Jarrett Barbuto is a geospatial analyst and research scientist at Spatial Informatics Group (SIG). He holds a degree in environmental ecience with a focus on Natural Resources at the University of Vermont. Jarrett is a FAA Certified UAS Pilot and has completed over 150 UAS missions. Jarrett has been involved in a wide-variety of GIS projects, which have utilized different sources of remotely sensed data that mostly focused on the creation of high-resolution land cover maps.
West Coast Design
Mike Attolico owns West Coast Design, a structural steel detailing company. His work involves creating detailed plans to fabricate steel assemblies, like columns and beams for buildings, for structural steel fabrication shops to work off of. “For us, it’s all computer work, and the job can be done from anywhere as well,” Attolico says. He has a few team members who work remote in various cities.
Andrew Hutton, Digital Marketing Consultant
Andrew Hutton is a digital marketing consultant, working with a handful of startups and small businesses across the U.S. Previously he worked as a manager at an agency in the Bay Area but left in early 2016 to pursue his dream of being able to work remotely from anywhere in the world. Andrew originally hails from New Zealand, and enjoys snowboarding, surfing and coffee.
Peter Thalman, Stoked Goods
Peter Thalman works remotely selling software for a start-up in customer support which provides economic opportunity for power-users as an alternative to outsourcing. He's also a cofounder of Stoked Goods, an organic lip and face balm made in a biodegradable tube, perfect for the dry mountain air and protecting our environment. When he’s not traveling for work, his priority is movement in nature with friends.
Daniel Flesner, Lhotse Software
Daniel Flesner is president of Lhotse Software, which specializes in back-end web architecture and cloud infrastructure. Most of their clients are in the radio, television, and podcasting fields and Lhotse is known for helping legacy media transition to the web. Daniel has another big job, too: He also specializes in raising young boys in the mountains.
Kendra Engstrom, Zynga
Kendra Engstrom is an international producer at Zynga, a San Francisco-based social game developer. She has worked in game development since 2004. She partners with game studios and cross-functional groups to deliver world-class experiences to international players and is a champion for localization and culturalization. Kendra relocated from San Francisco in 2013 to join her partner and take in the much-needed lifestyle change.
Rachel Durban, Sierra Nevada Alliance
Rachel is the Program Director for the Sierra Nevada Alliance’s Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP) Program. This program places 28 early-career professionals with conservation organizations throughout the Sierra for 11 months of service and training. Rachel brings over a decade of experience in ecological research, environmental education, nonprofit collaboration and program management to her role at the Alliance. Rachel is also a dedicated yoga practitioner and instructor and loves spending time outdoors exploring the Sierra and traveling.
Sara Monson, Sierra Nevada Alliance
Sara brings her love of education to her role as Education and Communication Director at Sierra Nevada Alliance. Sara began her teaching career as a TEFL volunteer in Peace Corps, Romania, then spent six years working in environmental education. Sara has a Master’s degree in Science Education from the University of Northern Colorado and an undergraduate degree from UC Santa Barbara in Psychology and Spanish. After living in Colorado for three years, Sara is excited to be back in her home state of California. In her free time Sara can be found hiking, camping, paddle boarding, snowboarding, and volunteering for SOS outreach.
Nicole Lutkemuller, Sierra Nevada Alliance
Growing up in the Sierra Nevada fueled Nicole Lutkemuller's passion for exploring, conserving, and restoring ecosystems . She brings years of experience in conservation planning, project management, outreach and education. Since completing a B.S. In environmental science from Sierra Nevada College in 2012, she has worked for the Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Land Management in Nevada, Alpine Watershed Group, and for a private GIS data visualization firm. She now holds the position of Sierra Corps Program Director for the Sierra Nevada Alliance. Nicole enjoys rock climbing, hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, snowboarding, adventuring with her dogs and partner, Dave, and seeing as much bluegrass music as possible.
Dave Zook, Writer
Dave Zook is a freelance writer focused mainly on sports and the outdoors, with a desire to expand into new writing topics. He studied journalism at the University of Oregon, and settled in Tahoe in 2013, where he worked at Truckee’s independent newspaper Moonshine Ink, and now focuses on freelance endeavors. He’s written for the San Francisco Chronicle, Powder, The Snowboarder's Journal, and more.
